How Rooftop Solar Works & How to Choose Equipment
A practical introduction to modules, inverters, electrical protection and monitoring.

From sunlight to usable electricity
Solar modules produce direct-current electricity. An inverter converts it to alternating current for the installation. Mounting structures support the array, while cabling, protection and earthing form part of the electrical system. Grid interaction depends on the approved connection and applicable arrangements.
When comparing proposals, look at the whole system. The panel brand alone does not establish the quality of the inverter selection, roof mounting or installation.
Choosing solar panels
Compare exact model datasheets, dimensions, electrical ratings and warranty documents. A higher-power module may need more space; the roof layout and inverter compatibility matter. Ask who handles a warranty claim and what is covered in product versus performance terms.
Choosing an inverter
Discuss array compatibility, grid connection, monitoring and any planned battery integration. Ask for the proposed model and why it suits the design. An inverter’s nameplate capacity alone does not tell you whether the whole system can support your chosen backup loads.
What to expect at handover
- A clear explanation of the system and normal operation.
- Equipment and warranty documents relevant to the installed models.
- Monitoring access where included and guidance on recognising problems.
- The agreed support contact and service responsibilities.
Do not operate electrical equipment or climb onto a roof based on online guidance. Ask the installation team to explain safe access and the appropriate response to alarms.
